Operation reproduces smiles from fibula from leg

Dr. Nguyen Quang Dai, Head of Ear-Nose-Throat Department, FV Hospital, has successfully performed a medical operation to reconstruct a facial defect on a patient with the patient’s own fibula flap.

Doctors prepare to take out a fibula flap from the patient’s left leg.

The surgery took place Feb. 14, 2017 at FV Hospital. The patient is Mr. H.V.T., 61 (born in 1956), a resident in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City. Dr Dai performed reconstructive surgery procedure to cure the patient.

Mr T. was diagnosed by FV with a cervicofacial defect and hospitalized on Feb. 13. On Feb. 14, Dr Dai and his operation team performed this procedure for 7 hours. The damaged jaw bone was removed and a fibula flap was taken out from the patient’s left leg to repair this defect in his mouth.

Dr Nguyen Quang Dai (C) performs this surgery.

Dr Dai predicted the patient will recover within 8 weeks. The fibula grafting technique ensure a normal face. The grafted low jaw flap of the patient is fed naturally in his chin, thus being alive. The patient can smile, chew and eat naturally again. Meanwhile, his fibula will recover itself normally.

Dr Dai added he has successfully treated many similar cases with this technique.
