‘World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024’ at FV Hospital: Continuously Learning and Supporting Together

The “World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024” event at FV Hospital recently concluded, delivering many impactful and meaningful messages. Centred on the theme “Educate. Advocate. Act Now,” the event emphasised the importance of responsible antibiotic use and inspired collective action to tackle antimicrobial resistance for a healthier future.

Using Antibiotics Responsibly: The “5 Rights” Principle

Antimicrobial resistance is a significant global health challenge, and Vietnam is equally affected by this alarming trend. As bacteria become increasingly resistant, infections become harder to treat, leading to longer hospital stays, higher treatment costs, and an elevated risk of mortality.

The primary driver of antimicrobial resistance is the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Specialists at FV Hospital highlighted the importance of adhering to the “5 Rights” principle – Right patient, Right drug, Right time, Right dose, Right duration. It is a straightforward yet highly effective way to safeguard both individuals and the wider community from the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

As part of the “World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024”, held from 18th to 24th November, FV Hospital organised various activities to raise community awareness and introduce advanced solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance. Highlights included two themed seminars focusing on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and optimised management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

From a professional perspective, Mr Mohd Fazli Shuib, Quality and Risk Management Director cum Head of Pharmacy at FV Hospital, stated: “FV Hospital has strict protocols to minimise hospital-acquired infections, which improves treatment quality and ensures a safer environment for both patients and healthcare staff.” He further explained that to achieve these results, FV Hospital has adopted a comprehensive approach, integrating various aspects such as technology, environmental control, infrastructure, and staff training.

Additionally, in treating infectious diseases and aligning with the goal of combating antimicrobial resistance, FV Hospital has implemented structured treatment processes. These include accurately identifying infection-causing agents, assessing multidrug resistance risks, enforcing strict antibiotic management protocols, and applying reasonable and safe antibiotic de-escalation strategies. Such measures help patients recover more quickly and minimise the development of antimicrobial resistance.

A Lively and Engaging Atmosphere Filled the Event Week

Throughout the “World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024”, the enthusiastic participation of patients and staff at FV Hospital played a key role in the event’s success. From professional seminars to surrounding activities, attendees showcased their shared commitment to addressing this critical healthcare challenge.

FV staff actively engaged in activities throughout the event week.

From the outset, FV staff actively participated in the thematic sharing sessions, engaging in discussions by listening, asking questions, and sharing practical experiences, which fostered a dynamic and interactive atmosphere across departments. A standout highlight was an online game designed for staff, featuring engaging questions on antibiotic knowledge. This activity created an enthusiastic environment, encouraged a spirit of learning, and provided a platform for connection and discussion at FV.

Beyond diverse training methods, FV Hospital stands out as a pioneer in healthcare, investing significantly in advanced testing systems and modern medical equipment. These innovations enable the medical team to quickly and accurately identify infectious disease causes, allowing for precise and personalised treatment regimens. This approach not only shortens treatment durations but also minimises drug misuse, safeguarding patients from potential complications.

FV Hospital also highlighted the critical role of prevention in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Vaccination packages for children and adults are an essential part of the strategy to protect community health. Proactive vaccination and regular health check-ups are the most effective ways to reduce the risk of infection and prevent serious consequences caused by bacterial diseases.

As the event week concluded, FV Hospital hopes to have conveyed the message that “every correct action today will shape a future free from the fear of antimicrobial resistance.” Together with FV, let us continue to raise awareness about responsible antibiotic use and work to safeguard the health of ourselves, our families, and society.
