Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of neurological disorders that affect movement, muscle tone, and posture, caused by damage to the developing brain, often before or during birth, though it can occur in early childhood up to 2 years of age. The talk will highlight the topology, motor/ movement disorders, etiologies, neuroimaging and co-morbidities associated with CP.
‘Cerebral Palsies’ or Cerebral palsy mimics are heterogeneous disorders that present with similar symptoms but have different underlying causes. These mimics can include genetic, metabolic, or neuromuscular disorders. Accurate diagnosis is crucial, as some mimics are treatable or progressive, requiring different management strategies than CP. The talk will cover clinical evaluation, neuroimaging, and relevant investigations to distinguish CP from its mimics.
The symptoms of CP vary but generally include: Impaired movement associated with exaggerated reflexes, Floppiness or spasticity of the limbs and trunk, Unusual posture, Involuntary movements, Unsteady walking…
Early diagnosis is crucial for managing CP effectively. Diagnostic tools like cranial ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI can help assess the extent of brain involvement.
Understanding cerebral palsy is essential for developing effective treatment and support strategies including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medications, and sometimes surgical interventions. This seminar aims to provide comprehensive insights into the causes, symptoms, and management of CP, fostering a collaborative approach to improve the quality of life for those affected.
