CME TRAINING PROGRAMME: ADVANCES IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: FROM INTERVENTION TO PREVENTION

To update medical knowledge and enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities for cardiovascular diseases, FV Hospital is organising a CME training programme titled “Advances in Cardiovascular Disease: From Intervention to Prevention” on 8:30 – 14:00, 19th April 2025 at Grand Ballroom, 2nd Floor, JW Marriott Hotel & Suites Saigon – 39 Le Duan Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, HCMC.

The training programme will feature in-depth presentations by leading national and international experts in cardiology, providing the latest updates on advances in cardiovascular treatment. Topics will cover cutting-edge interventional techniques as well as effective prevention strategies. This seminar promises to offer valuable insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cardiovascular diseases in the context of modern medicine.

SPEAKERS’ PROFILE:

VU TRUONG SON, MD, MSC – MEDICAL DIRECTOR, FV HOSPITAL (ORGANISER’S REPRESENTATIVE)

Vu Truong Son, MD, MSc graduated from Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2007 and taught there for two years following his graduation. He earned his Master’s degree in Tropical Diseases and International Health at the Institute of Francophone Tropical Medicine (IFMT) in 2009.

Dr Vu Truong Son began working at FV Hospital in 2013 and officially became the Head of the Infectious Disease Department in 2022. In May 2023, Dr Vu Truong Son additionally took on the role of Deputy Medical Director. Starting from early August 2024, he has been entrusted by the FV Hospital Board of Directors with the position of Acting Medical Director and he officially assumed the position of Medical Director in February 2025.

At FV, Dr Vu Truong Son has always received high trust from the Board of Directors and colleagues for his contributions to important policies such as the Response to Global Infectious Diseases and Infection Control, which have been successfully developed and implemented in the hospital. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Son made significant contributions to the Infection Control Unit and Infectious Disease Department at FV.

PROF DO DOAN LOI, MD, PHD, PRESIDENT OF VIETNAM HEART FAILURE ASSOCIATION, BACH MAI HOSPITAL (CHAIRMAN – SPEAKER)

Prof Do Doan Loi, MD, PhD, is a leading authority in cardiovascular medicine in Vietnam, with nearly four decades of experience. He specialises in echocardiography, heart failure treatment, and hypertension management. Prof Loi has played a key role in implementing techniques in Vietnam such as Contrast Echocardiography and Stress Echocardiography for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Throughout his career, Dr Loi has held several key leadership roles. These include Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at Bach Mai Hospital, Director of the Vietnam Heart Institute at Bach Mai Hospital, and Vice Rector of Hanoi Medical University. He has been affiliated with the Vietnam Heart Institute – Bach Mai Hospital since 1983.

Prof Loi earned his medical degree from Rostov Medical University (USSR), where he studied from 1975 to 1982 and completed advanced training in cardiology. He later obtained a PhD in Medicine and was appointed Associate Professor in 2006, followed by a full Professorship in 2015. Due to his significant contributions to medical education, he was awarded with the title of Excellent Teacher, and subsequently honoured as a People’s Teacher in 2014. Throughout his career, Dr Loi has made substantial contributions to cardiovascular medicine in Vietnam. He has published over 60 research papers in both national and international journals and has participated in many state-level and ministry-level research projects. In recognition of his achievements, he received the State Award for Science and Technology in 2005, along with multiple accolades for excellence within the ministry. He has also been honoured with the Second and Third-Class Labour Medals by the State. In addition to his clinical and research work, Prof. Loi holds several prominent positions. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Vietnam Society of Cardiology, and Vice President of the Hypertension Association and the Echocardiography Association of Vietnam. He has been a member of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) since 2007. Through his ongoing contributions, Prof Loi is recognised as one of the most influential cardiovascular experts both in Vietnam and internationally.

ASSOC. PROF PHAM NGUYEN VINH, MD, PHD, VICE PRESIDENT OF VIETNAM HEART ASSOCIATION (CHAIRMAN – SPEAKER)

Assoc. Prof Pham Nguyen Vinh, MD, PhD, is one of the leading cardiologists in Vietnam. After graduating from the Cardiology Department of Saigon Medical University, he continued his medical studies in France for two years. In 1997, he successfully defended his PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) thesis at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City and was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2002. In addition to his dedication to medical examination and treatment, Assoc. Prof. Vinh, is also deeply committed to medical education. He has authored eighteen medical training books and published over 150 valuable scientific papers in Vietnamese and international journals.

With over 50 years of experience in cardiovascular research, clinical practice, and treatment, Assoc. Prof Vinh has held several prominent roles, including Head of Cardiology Department at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute, Director of Cardiology at Tam Duc Heart Hospital. He currently serves as President of the Vietnamese Society of Echocardiography, Vice President of the Vietnamese Heart Association, Head of the Internal Medicine Department at Tan Tao University of Medicine and Pharmacy and continues to teach at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.

HO MINH TUAN, MD, PHD, HEAD OF CARDIOLOGY AND INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT, FV HOSPITAL (MODERATOR – SPEAKER)

Ho Minh Tuan, MD, PhD, graduated from Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1999, obtained a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine from University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City in 2014, and completed his PhD in Internal Cardiology at the Research Institute of Clinical Pharmacy and Medicine 108, Hanoi in 2023. He has also undertaken a range of specialised training courses, such as echocardiography and cardiovascular diseases in 2001 at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, imaging in 2003 at University of Medicine, Ho Chi Minh City, cardiology at the Heart Institute from 2003 to 2005, and interventional cardiology at the Institute Jantung Negara (IJN) in Malaysia and Saiseikai Yokohama Eastern Hospital in Japan from 2007 to 2008.

With over 25 years of experience in medicine, Dr Tuan is recognised as a highly skilled and experienced cardiologist, respected by colleagues and trusted by patients. He spent four years at the Heart Institute, followed by his role as the Head of Imaging Department and Senior Consultant at Tam Duc Hospital. Since March 2021, he has been serving as the Head of Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital.

With access to a state-of-the-art Cathlab and a strong commitment to adopting the latest technologies, Ho Minh Tuan, MD, PhD and his team are at the forefront of advanced cardiovascular care. They have successfully implemented cutting-edge techniques such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for coronary imaging, Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), and the latest generation of Rotational Atherectomy for coronary artery calcification. The team also utilizes 3Mensio software, integrated with AI, for planning structural heart interventions. These innovations are being effectively applied at the Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital, under the leadership of Ho Minh Tuan, MD, PhD, ensuring both high treatment effectiveness and patient safety.

ASSOC. PROF NGUYEN THI BICH DAO, MD, PHD, VICE PRESIDENT OF VIETNAM ASSOCIATION OF DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY (SPEAKER)

Assoc. Prof Nguyen Thi Bich Dao, MD, PhD, has over 40 years of medical experience and is a recognised expert in the field of endocrinology. She currently serves as the Deputy Director of Endocrinology – Metabolism – Nutrition at Tam Duc Heart Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr Bich Dao graduated in medicine in 1981 from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, earned her PhD in Internal Medicine from the Vietnam Military Medical University in Hanoi in 1991, and was awarded the title of Associate Professor in Medicine in 2012. She has held several prominent positions, including Head of the Endocrinology Department at Cho Ray Hospital, Head of the Endocrinology Department at the Faculty of Medicine – University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, and Vice President of the Vietnam Endocrinology and Diabetes Association.

Assoc. Prof Nguyen Thi Bich Dao, MD, PhD, has contributed to over 30 research projects at various levels, as well as authored thirty scientific papers published both in Vietnam and internationally. She remains actively involved in teaching and supervising scientific research at the medical school.

LE TU PHUONG THAO, MD, PHD, NEUROLOGY UNIT – INTERNAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENT, FV HOSPITAL (SPEAKER)

Le Tu Phuong Thao, MD, PhD is a leading neurologist in Vietnam with over 30 years’ experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and research neurological conditions. She has made significant contributions to clinical work, teaching, and research, helping to improve the quality of patient care in Vietnam. Dr Thao graduated with a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City in 1990. She went on to complete several advanced training programmes, including a Preliminary Course in Neurology at the same university (1990–1991), a Clinical Neurophysiology certification at Paris V University, France (1994–1996), and a PhD in Neurology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City (1998–2006), with a thesis on cerebral infarction.

Over her three-decade career, Dr Thao has held several key positions, including: Doctor in the Neurology Department at People’s 115 Hospital (1990–1994); Assistant Neurologist at Sainte-Anne Hospital, Paris, France (1994–1996); Lecturer and Doctor at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine (1996–2014); Deputy Head of the Neurology Department at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital (2007–2008); Head of the Neurology Department at the same hospital (2008–2014); Neurologist at FV Hospital (2014–2024); and Director of District 6 Hospital (since October 2023). Le Tu Phuong Thao, MD, PhD has published numerous important research papers in both Vietnamese and international medical journals, with a focus on neurological conditions such as cerebral infarction, epilepsy, meningitis, and infectious-related neurological disorders. Some of her work has been published in the Ho Chi Minh City Medical Journal, and she has presented at numerous international neurology conferences. Additionally, she has been recognised with prestigious awards, including the Research Award for Developing Countries in 2012 (€10,000) from the French Epilepsy Research Fund (FFRE).

KEH YANN SHAN, MMED, MRCP, CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT NATIONAL HEART CENTRE SINGAPORE (SPEAKER)

Dr Keh Yann Shan is a Cardiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS). He has specialised expertise in interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology, with extensive experience in diagnosing and managing complex cardiovascular diseases. Dr Keh graduated with a medical degree from the National University of Malaysia in 2010. He went on to complete a number of advanced training programmes, including the MRCP certification from the Royal Colleges of Physicians in 2014, a Master’s in Medicine (MMed) in Internal Medicine at SingHealth (2014–2016), advanced cardiology training at SingHealth (2016–2019), Nuclear Cardiology certification from the American Board of Nuclear Cardiology (2020), and Cardiovascular Medicine specialist certification from the Singapore Medical Council’s Specialist Register (2020).

Currently, Dr Keh holds several key roles, including Consultant at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), Senior Lecturer at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Consultant at NHCS @ SKH, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS. Previously, he served as Senior Resident and Resident at SingHealth, as well as Specialist Resident in Internal Medicine at MOHH. Dr Keh Yann Shan has published over 60 research papers in respected national and international medical journals, focusing on interventional cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, and heart failure treatment. He is also a member of the Singapore Cardiac Society and has contributed significantly to medical research at the national-level.

TRAN DAI QUYNH VAN, MD, MSC, CARDIOLOGY AND INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT, FV HOSPITAL (SPEAKER)

Tran Dai Quynh Van, MD, MSc has over 20 years’ experience in diagnosing and treating complex cardiovascular diseases. She currently works in the Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital. Dr Quynh Van graduated from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2002 and earned her Master’s in Medicine from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City in 2012. She also completed a number of advanced training programmes, including Echocardiography at the Heart Institute & Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine (2002–2003), Internal Medicine Cardiology at the Heart Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (2003–2005), General and Advanced Echocardiography at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City (2007), and Electrocardiogram Analysis at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine (2015).

Dr Quynh Van has spent many years at Tam Duc Heart Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, where she held several roles as a Senior Doctor across various departments. These included the Outpatient Cardiology (2006–2009), the Cardiology – Electrophysiological Studies and Arrhythmia Treatment (2009–2012), the Intensive Care (2012–2013), and the Internal Cardiology (2013–2016). Since 2017, she has been serving as a Senior Doctor in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr Van has a particular interest and expertise in diagnosing and treating arrhythmias using both medical and interventional approaches. She is also experienced in the assessment and treatment of carotid artery disease to reduce the risk of stroke, as well as manage venous insufficiency to improve blood circulation and enhance patients’ quality of life.

JOHN C. WANG, MD, MSC, MBBCH, VASCULAR AND GENERAL SURGEON, MOUNT ELIZABETH HOSPITAL (SPEAKER)

Dr John Chaw Chian Wang, is a Vascular Surgeon and General Surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He has extensive expertise in both vascular and endovascular surgery and remains up to date with the latest international treatment methods to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients. Dr Wang graduated with honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and went on to complete a Master’s in Clinical Anatomy and Anthropology at the National University of Ireland, Dublin. He holds dual certifications in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery from the American Board of Surgery. He completed his General Surgery Residency and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

With over 10 years’ experience in vascular surgery in both the United States and Singapore, Dr Wang has held key positions including Senior Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Singapore General Hospital and Vascular Surgeon at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, each for five years. In 2012, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program and founded the Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program at Case Medical Center of University Hospitals, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr Wang has published numerous research articles in leading medical journals, including the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, and the British Journal of Surgery. He has been recognised with several prestigious awards, including the Charles Guthrie Award, the Alex Chao MD Young Researcher Award, the DVVS Outstanding Basic & Clinical Research Award, and the RiSE Teaching Excellence Award at SingHealth.

DR HOANG QUANG MINH, CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT, FV HOSPITAL (SPEAKER)

Dr Hoang Quang Minh has over 15 years’ experience in diagnosing and treating arrhythmias and currently works in the Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital. He graduated with a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City in 2007. Dr Minh subsequently undertook advanced training in interventional cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at leading cardiovascular centres in Vietnam and overseas, including: Training in coronary intervention and electrophysiology at Tam Duc Heart Hospital and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City; A fellowship in electrophysiology and catheter ablation of arrhythmias at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), Taiwan; Advanced training in pacemaker and ICD implantation at Cho Ray Hospital; Participation in numerous workshops and professional training courses organised by leading global cardiovascular organizations such as APHRS, HRS, and EHRA.

With a strong foundation and extensive experience, Dr Minh has successfully performed a wide range of advanced procedures in arrhythmia treatment, including: Catheter ablation using radiofrequency (RF ablation) for complex arrhythmias such as Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Atrial Fibrillation (AF), Ventricular Premature Contractions (VPC), and Ventricular Tachycardia (VT); Implantation of pacemakers, ICDs, CRT-P, and CRT-D for the treatment of heart failure and dangerous arrhythmias; Implantation of leadless pacemakers, including pioneering the first Micra AV implantation in Vietnam; Insertion of Implantable Loop Recorders (ILR) to detect hidden arrhythmias.

Before joining FV Hospital, Dr Minh worked at Tam Duc Heart Hospital (2008-2014) and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (2014-2022). In 2017, he completed a fellowship at TVGH, Taiwan. He has made significant contributions to the scientific community, presenting research at international cardiology conferences such as APHRS, HRS, KSC-ACC, and ACAS, and publishing articles in reputable international cardiology journals. In recognition of his work, he received the Best Presentation Award at APHRS 2022 in Singapore. Dr Minh is a member of several professional organisations, including the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), the Vietnam Cardiology Society, and the Vietnam Heart Rhythm Society.

DR SHARGUNANDASS IYNAM, CONSULTANT INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST, SERDANG HEART CENTER, MALAYSIA (SPEAKER)

Dr Shargunandass Iynam is a cardiologist with extensive experience in managing complex cardiovascular conditions. He specializes in coronary artery interventions, including atherectomy with rotational and orbital techniques, structural heart interventions, intravascular imaging, echocardiography, cardiac CT and MRI, pulmonary hypertension, and adult congenital heart disease. Dr Iynam places a strong emphasis on early diagnosis and timely intervention in cardiovascular care, advocating that “early detection is key to reducing morbidity and mortality.” Dr Iynam graduated with a medical degree from the University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in 2010 and obtained his MRCP (UK) specialization certification in 2015. To further develop his expertise, he completed advanced training in Structural Heart Interventions at the Gottesegen National Heart Institute in Budapest, Hungary. He is currently practicing as a cardiology specialist at the Serdang Heart Centre.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Iynam is actively involved in research and medical education. He has published numerous studies in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at leading cardiology conferences, including those organised by the National Heart Association of Malaysia (NHAM), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and other professional forums. He is also a member of the Structural Heart Intervention Team at the Serdang Heart Centre and the Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic Committee. Dr Shargunandass received the “Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang” award in 2016 in recognition of his outstanding contributions. He is widely regarded as one of the leading interventional cardiology experts in Malaysia.
