The Laboratory and Blood Bank Department at FV Hospital has recently been recognised for expanding its range of ISO 15189:2012-certified biochemical tests, adding 36 new indicators. This certification underscores FV Hospital’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare services quality.
ISO 15189:2012 is an international standard specifically designed for medical laboratories certifying stringent requirements for quality management systems and technical competence. The primary objective of this standard is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results.

The ISO 15189:2012 standard imposes rigorous demands on the entire testing process, from sample collection, preparation, and analysis to result reporting. This comprehensive approach minimises errors and ensures precise and dependable test outcomes. When a laboratory has attained ISO 15189 certification, both doctors and patients can have confidence in the quality of the test results, which in turn enhances treatment efficacy and fosters a positive mind-set among clinical staff and patients alike.
The decision to recognise and expand the range of certified tests was made following a thorough evaluation by an assessment team. Mr Friend Maviza, Head of the Laboratory and Blood Bank Department, expressed pride in achieving ISO 15189 certification, stating, “We are extremely proud to have attained ISO 15189 certification. This achievement reflects our proactive approach to quality improvement and our commitment to the hospital’s mission of ‘Providing world-class medical services.” Although ISO 15189 is not yet a mandatory standard for medical laboratories in Vietnam, it is widely regarded and trusted by worldwide as a critical component of healthcare management framework.

The Laboratory and Blood Bank Department first achieved ISO 15189:2012 certification in November 2019, with recertification occurring every three years. The addition of 36 new tests follows the February 2023 recognition decision, expanding FV’s ISO 15189:2012-certified testing scope to a total of 41 tests, across the fields of biochemistry, immunology, and haematology.
Many countries have integrated the ISO 15189 standard into their legal frameworks because it ensures the high accuracy of test results, providing a critical foundation for doctors to make informed diagnostic and treatment decisions. Moreover, the implementation of ISO 15189:2012 facilitates the establishment of efficient laboratory management systems, reducing waste, minimising errors, and enhancing productivity.
The Laboratory and Blood Bank Department’s team is youthful, dynamic, and constantly innovating
The Laboratory and Blood Bank Department at FV Hospital is currently the first medical laboratory operating within a hospital in Vietnam to achieve JCI accreditation, in addition to being recognised under ISO 15189 and Westgard Sigma VP standards. The expansion of 36 new ISO 15189:2012-certified biochemical tests further ensures the reliability and accuracy of test results, thereby supporting clinical decision-making and improving the quality of care for FV’s patients.
