Advancing diabetes care: Modern solutions presented at CME medical seminar

On November 14, 2024, as part of activities marking World Diabetes Day, FV Hospital hosted a CME Medical Seminar titled “Multispecialty Approach in the Treatment of Diabetes & Diabetic Complications”. The seminar brought together over 150 doctors, nurses, and leading experts in endocrinology to share updates on the latest treatment methods and emphasise the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in diabetes care.

Enhancing Treatment Outcomes with Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Opening the seminar, Specialist Level II, Nguyen Viet Quynh Thu, MD, MSc, Head of Nutrition & Dietetics Department at FV Hospital, represented the organising committee in extending her gratitude to colleagues and guests in attendance. Dr Quynh Thu shared, “In the context of the rising number of diabetes cases, collaboration among specialties is crucial. Only by integrating knowledge and approaches from various fields can we achieve the best treatment outcomes and ensure comprehensive care for patients.”

The seminar opened with a presentation by Specialist Level I, Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, MD, MSc, from the Internal Medicine Department at FV Hospital. Dr Huong highlighted that modern guidelines for diabetes treatment now encompass more than blood sugar management, focusing on various aspects of care, including lifestyle modification, nutrition, and complication management. She highlighted the importance of early treatment upon diagnosis to improve outcomes and effectively control the disease. Dr Huong also presented recent studies demonstrating that applying these new guidelines can reduce the risk of cardiovascular and kidney complications by up to 30%, while underscoring the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in enhancing patients’ quality of life.

During the seminar, Dr Nguyen Huu Man, Specialist Level I, and an experienced expert in diabetes treatment and patient care, shared valuable insights on comprehensive care for diabetes patients, particularly inpatients at FV Hospital. Dr Man emphasised that effective diabetes management involves more than just blood sugar control, highlighting the importance of addressing other aspects such as complication management and psychological support for patients. He underscored that multidisciplinary collaboration plays a vital role in enhancing treatment outcomes and reducing complications for patients.

Following this, Tran Trieu Phuong Dong, MD, MSc, Paediatrics & Neonatology Department at FV Hospital, delivered a presentation on the challenges of managing type 1 diabetes in children. He explained: “Children require specialised care and support from their families, schools, and healthcare teams. We strive to optimise treatment approaches tailored to each age group to ensure they can grow healthily and manage their condition effectively.”

The Importance of Nutrition and Specialised Care in Managing Diabetes Complications

Turning to the topic of managing complications, Dr Truong Hoang Vinh Khiem, Specialist Level II and an expert in Orthopaedic Trauma from Bone & Joint Centre at FV Hospital shared: “Many diabetic patients experience issues with non-healing wounds, which can lead to severe infections and even amputations. We recommend that patients and their families regularly check and clean their feet, wear shoes designed for diabetic individuals and follow the doctor’s instructions to prevent this dangerous complication.” Dr Khiem also introduced some new treatment methods aimed at improving patient outcomes and minimising the risk of amputations.

Specialist Level II, Chau Thi Kim Lien, MD, MSc, a Nephrology expert from the Internal Medicine Department at FV Hospital, also provided updates on the latest guidelines for managing chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients. Dr Lien emphasised, “Diabetic patients are at high risk for chronic kidney disease. Through coordinated treatment involving the nephrology, endocrinology, and nutrition departments, we aim to control the progression of the disease and improve patients’ quality of life.”

Concluding the seminar, Specialist Level II, Dr Nguyen Viet Quynh Thu, MD, MSc, discussed the management of diabetes in patients with obesity. She shared, “For diabetic patients with obesity, developing a proper diet plan is crucial. At FV, we personalise each nutrition regimen for our patients to meet their various health needs and improve treatment outcomes.”
