Professor Donald Tan from Singapore, the former President of the World Corneal Society, will provide corneal consultations and surgeries at FV’s Ophthalmology Department from 26th to 29th October 2017.
Prof. Donald Tan is a world-leading eye specialist in advanced corneal transplantation, including Osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis (OOKP “tooth-in-eye” surgery) for severe corneal injuries; and lamellar keratoplasty, when only the damaged or diseased corneal layers are replaced with healthy donor corneal layers. This helps to minimise the risk of complications and results in an optimal treatment outcome when compared to traditional total corneal replacement.
Dr Donald Tan is recognised worldwide for his expertise in complicated corneal transplant techniques, including:
- Penetrating keratoplasty
- Anterior lamellar keratoplasty
- Endothelial keratoplasty
- Combining penetrating keratoplasty and cataract surgery
- Combining endothelial keratoplasty and cataract surgery.
The corneal grafts used are imported from corneal banks in the USA and Singapore, where corneas are processed and carefully preserved in the best conditions. Because we source corneas from around the world, FV patients wait less time to be matched with a donor.
Since the first corneal transplantation procedure conducted at FV Hospital in May 2016, Dr Donald Tan has successfully performed more than 20 corneal surgeries during his rotating visits to FV Hospital.
FV Hospital and Prof. Donald Tan offer charity corneal transplantations to four disadvantaged patients
To assist underprivileged, sight-impaired patients to regain their vision, FV Hospital and Dr Donald Tan will partner to offer charity corneal transplantations for four disadvantaged patients at FV Hospital on 28 October 2017.
FVH doctors and nurses have already visited Vinh Chau Town, Soc Trang Province, and selected four patients with corneal problems who meet the eligibility requirements, i.e. they are typically underprivileged and in need of support.
The full cost of surgery for these patients, approximately VND 1 billion, in which, cost of surgery VND 400 million will be waived by Dr Donald Tan. FV Hospital will finance the remaining costs, covering hospitalisation, corneal grafts, meals, accommodation and travel for patients, totalling around VND 600 million.
