Ms T.T. Tuyet (41, resident of Long An) came to FV Hospital with twitching eyelids. This unusual disease had been troubling her for six years, despite receiving a host of treatments at many hospitals. Last month, her eyes convulsed when riding a motorcycle, causing her to fall and break her legs. After being examined by doctors and having CT and MRI scans for tumours or lesions in the brain (none were detected), Dr Vu Anh Le of FV’s Opthalmology Department reached a diagnosis of simple eyelid convulsions and loss of muscle control. Dr Anh Le decided to operate on the eyelid and remove the muscle causing the seizures of the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. The surgery took almost five hours, ending in success. In addition, Dr Vu Anh Le conducted an aesthetic eyelid surgery to give Ms Tuyet the eyelid shape she desired. Ten days after being discharged from FV, Ms Tuyet’s eyes were only slightly swollen and able to open and close normally. Her eye convulsions had completely disappeared. After six years of suffering, she was no longer anxious about sudden seizures. According to Dr Vu Anh Le, the main cause of Tuyet’s disease is muscular dystrophy causing involuntary muscle spasm affecting the part of the body which is rotated or deformed. You should go to the hospital immediately if you suffer convulsive eyelid symptoms: Eyelid convulses repeatedly several times a day Eyelid is completely collapsed so that the eyes cannot open when it convulses Long-term, chronic convulsive eyelid Convulsive eyelid affects the other muscles of the face, causing distortion, torticollis, etc.
