Paediatric Emergencies

The FV Emergency Department is ready 24/7 to care for newborns and children in urgent situations.

Our Paediatric Emergency Department operates 24/7 to handle emergencies in newborns and children. We have a team of experienced doctors, including paediatric emergency specialists, neonatologists, and paediatricians. Patients can be admitted to the Paediatric Ward, Paediatric High-Dependency Unit, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Neonatal High Dependency Unit depending on their age and on the severity of their condition.

Call emergency services immediately if your child has:

  • Stops breathing, irregular breathing, or severe wheezing
  • Loss of consciousness or change in alertness
  • Fainting, seizures, or no response when called
  • Extremely drowsy or hard to wake up
  • Eyes rolling continuously or fixed stare
  • Head injury followed by vomiting, drowsiness, or seizures
  • Fever ≥ 39°C not reduced by correct dose of medication
  • Fever with seizures, purple rash, stiff neck, or rapid breathing
  • Fever over 38°C in infants under 3 months
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, not urinating >6 hours, dry lips, sunken eyes
  • Blood in stool or vomit
  • Fall from height, strong impact, suspected fracture or head trauma
  • Wounds that bleed more than 10 minutes despite pressure
  • Severe burns, electrical burns, or chemical burns
  • Foreign objects stuck in throat, nose, or ear
  • Suspected poisoning or severe allergic reaction
  • Insect, bee, or snake bites
  • Signs of anaphylaxis: swelling of face, lips, tongue; difficulty breathing; widespread hives
  • Fainting, pale or cold skin, weak pulse
  • Chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Initial Screening: You will be asked for important information about your child’s current health.
  • Registration: You will be guided through the emergency admission procedure.
  • Triage: A nurse will check vital signs and assess severity and urgency to determine priority.
  • Examination & Treatment: A emergency specialist will examine, prescribe tests and other investigations if required, provide a provisional diagnosis and decide whether a hospitalisation is necessary.
  • Critical Cases: Children with life-threatening signs or requiring urgent intervention will be immediately admitted to the resuscitation room for timely care.
