A Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment asks something broader and more important: what is this person’s full situation, and what do they need to live as well as possible? Families often tell us the same thing after a CGA at FV. It is the first appointment where someone asked about everything, not just the condition they came in for. The medication that had been causing dizziness for two years. The appetite loss nobody had investigated. The fact that they had not left the house in a month. These things matter, and they are the kinds of findings that change a care plan entirely. At FV, the CGA is a dedicated, unhurried appointment. We cover: Medical history and chronic disease review – current diagnoses, hospitalisation history, and surgical background Medication audit – a full review of everything being taken, with a focus on safety and simplification Cognitive screening – standardised tools to assess memory, attention, and orientation Nutritional status – body weight, muscle mass, dietary intake, and swallowing function Physical function – muscle strength, gait speed, balance, and fall risk using validated assessments Sensory assessment – vision and hearing, which are frequently undertreated contributors to both cognitive decline and falls Mental health screening – depression and anxiety using validated scales Social circumstances – living situation, caregiver support, financial pressures, and the degree of connection in daily life Every finding is discussed with you and your family in plain language.
