UPDATES ON ADVANCED CEREBROVASCULAR INTERVENTION AND COLORECTAL CANCER (CRC) SCREENING

During the FV Wednesday held on 18 March, specialists at FV discussed two key topics: minimally invasive interventional techniques for the treatment of cerebral vascular malformations and new strategies in colorectal cancer screening.

Dr Huynh Huu Danh, Specialist Level I (Interventional Radiology Unit) shared insights into the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) using techniques such as the injection of liquid embolic agents (medical glue) via microcatheters.

This is a modern endovascular interventional technique, employing ultra-fine catheters to access and precisely “seal off” the AVM nidus without the need for open surgery. This method effectively eliminates the lesion, ensures maximum protection of brain functions, and facilitates a rapid recovery for the patient.

Dr Nguyen Huu Nhan, MSc (Gastroenterology & Hepatology Department) presented on Colorectal Cancer (CRC) screening. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide, it is frequently detected at advanced stages among patients in Vietnam.

While 45 is the recommended age, Dr Nhan advises immediate screening for those with a family history or symptoms like persistent bowel changes, blood in stool, or unexplained weight loss. Early detection is key to optimising treatment and preventing complications.

Alongside the “gold standard” of colonoscopy, patients at FV also have the option of a CT Colonography (virtual colonoscopy). This modern, non-invasive alternative provides a more comfortable screening experience with high accuracy in detecting abnormal lesions.

WHAT IS FV WEDNESDAY?

FV Wednesday is a series of seminars held fortnightly on Wednesdays. It serves as a forum for FV doctors, partner physicians, and clinical staff to meet, share insights, and learn from one another. By discussing unique clinical cases and advanced techniques, the programme helps maintain JCI-standard international service quality while ensuring costs remain accessible for patients in Vietnam.

Next Seminar Schedule (12:15 – 08/04/2026):

  • Topic 1: Immune Therapy in Oncology – Dr Vo Thi Phuong Thao, MSc (Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre).
  • Topic 2: Imaging in Pancreatic Cancer – Dr Pham Dinh Khuong, Specialist Level I (Imaging & Interventional Radiology Department).
